Terrifying Moment Stranger Grabs Baby From Grocery Store Cart Is Caught on Video

Every mom’s worst nightmare came true for this Texas mom—right in the middle of the grocery store.

Texas mom Florence Monauer was on a routine grocery shopping trip with her 14-month-old daughter when the unthinkable happened: a strange man tried to remove her child from the grocery cart while Monauer’s back was turned picking grocery items off a shelf. The man, who had walked by a few seconds earlier and played with the child a little bit, had soundlessly returned and grabbed the child when he saw an opportunity. Luckily, the baby’s shopping cart cover made some noise as the man tried to remove her, and Monauer heard the sound and turned, retrieving her child from the stranger’s arms.

Monauer, an attorney, didn’t report the incident at first—she was inclined to give the man the benefit of the doubt. But as the day wore on, she became more and more uncomfortable with what had occurred and filed a police report. Fortunately, the grocery store surveillance camera clearly shows the man picking up her child without first speaking to her or asking permission.

Monauer told CBS News about the man’s chilling statement to her after she had gotten her child out of his arms:

“At no point did he talk to me. He never asked me to pick up my baby,” Monauer said. “He said the strangest thing….‘I wanted to take you when your mom wasn’t looking.’”

WOW! Is that a frightening statement or WHAT?

The 33-year-old mom continued: “He didn’t have a shopping cart, no merchandise. The more I thought about it, the more creeped out I felt. For me, the crime of attempting to kidnap someone was completed the moment when he picked up my child with my back turned and without my consent.”

She says she does NOT want to falsely accuse the man especially if the man is “just awkward and didn’t understand boundaries,” and though I of course I understand her hesitancy there, I think she did the right thing by reporting the incident. It’s “Better safe than sorry” where child safety is concerned, and if this is the way that man LEARNS boundaries, so be it!

I’m so thankful Monauer was able to maintain a cool head and that her little girl is safe! What would you do if YOU were in this situation?
