Birmingham, Alabama couple Allison and Josh met in college and delighted in planning a future together. When it came to kids, they planned a couple. “We thought two, MAYBE three,” they say. And then, they LAUGH, because after having four biological children, they decided to adopt a 5th child. THEN, they knew their family was complete.
Or it was, until…October 30, 2015, when Allison received a call from a friend asking if they would consider adopting the child of a woman they knew who could not care for the baby. After a night of praying and asking God for wisdom, Allison and Josh said “yes.”
When they got the news that the birth mom was in labor, they got in the car and headed to North Carolina, where the baby would be born. On the way, they got not one, but TWO phone calls that would change their lives. The first was amazing news: there was not ONE baby, but TWO! Boy-girl twins. Josh and Allison were shocked but thrilled. The second call, however, was devastating: the girl twin, who they would name Ava, was born with no brain—only a brain stem—and might not even make it through the night.
Once again, Josh and Allison had a heart-wrenching decision to make, and as you’ll see below, their story does not stop there—and it’s one of the most beautiful you will EVER hear.
I love what Allison says about talking with the twins’ birth mom the day after they were born. She says “The biggest joy out of this whole thing” was to sit with their birth mom and to “thank her for preserving their lives…she just walked through a lot to give them life, and oh, just…OVERWHELMED with thankfulness to her.”
Ava’s life is SO precious, no matter how long it lasts, and I’m so privileged even to have heard this family’s beautiful story. I pray God blesses EVERY moment they have here on this earth together.
