Surfer Bethany Hamilton, 27, made a big announcement on Instagram this week: she and her husband Adam Dirks are expecting their second child. She says she and Dirks are waiting to find out the baby’s gender, so we don’t yet know if their son Tobias, 2, will be getting a baby brother or a baby sister in March. The announcement left little doubt how they already feel about the baby, though. The sweet video of Tobias kissing his mommy’s tummy was captioned with,”More than thankful to share our joyous news!”
Hamilton gained notoriety after a shark bit off her arm while she was surfing in 2003 at age 13, and her resilience amazed the world as she returned to the water just one month after the incident, taught herself to surf with one arm and began competing in surfing competitions only a year later. Since then, Hamilton has been one of the most successful female competitive surfers in the United States and the world. In August of this year, Bethany was honored by being inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame.
Hamilton and Dirks are devoted Christians, and Hamilton has spoken often about how her Christian faith helped her find meaning and purpose after the shark attack, and how it still motivates her today. On her website, she says,
Growing up in a Christian home was a huge blessing for me. At a young age I was introduced to what Jesus Christ has done for all of mankind. Through his death and resurrection on the cross, He provides the forgiveness of our sins and eternal life. This gives me hope in the future that I have as a Christian. As rough times come my way, like when I lost my arm to the shark, and as life throws challenging curve balls, I take joy and am grounded in God’s promises found in His Word, the Bible. I still hold fast to his truths today.
The couple married in 2013 and welcomed Tobias, whose name means “the greatness of God,” in 2015.
I have long admired Hamilton’s outspoken faith in a world where she is under plenty of scrutiny. She is such a great role model to young girls when it comes overcoming obstacles, keeping strong in your faith in Christ and finding purpose in the HARD things—as well as balancing marriage, motherhood, and a career. I wish this little family all the best and I can’t WAIT to hear if their new little surfer is a boy or a girl! (I kinda hope it’s a mini-Bethany!) I have no doubt she’ll be just as amazing at wrangling two kids with just one arm as she is at surfing.
