‘Still In Repair’—Kimberly Van Der Beek Opens Up About Traumatic Miscarriage

Kimberly Van Der Beek

Kimberly Van Der Beek is opening up about her scary miscarriage and how her body is doing just months after losing their baby boy too soon.

The mother of five has taken to Instagram several times throughout the healing process to update fans on how she is doing. She and husband James Van Der Beek have always been outspoken when it comes to erasing the stigma that surrounds miscarriage. This experience has been no different.

“Eccentric artists take selfies right?” Kimberly wrote in a recent Instagram post.

“With all the health effects of SO MUCH that has happened to my body in the last few months and the pregnancy (for clarification on the congrats I’m getting, the pregnancy ended in Nov), I am now 35lbs more than my normal range of what’s heavy to me,” she explained, reflecting on the weight of the family’s last few months.

“Guess what?! Love all your shapes en route to your best health! And love all of you en route to who you want to become, which is most certainly ever-changing anyhow.”

Back in November, Kimberly took to Instagram just hours after suffering the traumatic miscarriage to share the heartbreaking news with fans.

“In 48 hours we lost our baby — boy, by the way — and I almost lost my life,” Kimberly said in a video. “Which is not a story that has been told, but at some point I can dig into the details with you guys about what happened in the emergency room.”

She later elaborated, sharing that the scary ordeal required several blood transfusions.

“A lot of you have asked how I’m feeling physically. I’m healing. I am definitely healing,” she said, thanking fans for their outpouring of love and support.

“My biggest thing is my blood pressure,” she added. “I just get very lightheaded very easily so I can’t really get up and walk around for more than a couple minutes right now. A lot of blood transfusion action this weekend, so I’m just taking it super easy trying to restore and build my blood.”

Wrecked. Devastated. In shock. That’s how we’re feeling right now after the soul we thought were going to welcome into our family in April… has taken a short cut to whatever lies beyond this life. We’ve been through this before, but never this late in the pregnancy, and never accompanied by such a scary, horrific threat to @vanderkimberly and her well-being. Grateful that she’s now recovering, but we’ve only just begun unpacking the layers of this one. Thank you to all of our friends and co-workers (and dance partners) who have shown up for us so beautifully during this time. As many of you have said, “There are no words…” and it’s true. Which is why in a time like this it’s enough to know that you’re there. Grieving AND counting our blessings today.

James and Kimberly first shared they were expecting another baby back in October.

“I’m pregnant with a sixth child!” Kimberly wrote in an Instagram post.

The couple, who has suffered three miscarriages in recent years, decided to have their first ultrasound on camera with the Dancing with the Stars crew.

“[Kimberly] and I have been through three of those first appointments to discover either no heartbeat, or no baby, and she wanted to share this moment,” James wrote in his announcement.

“Miscarriage (a word that needs a replacement – nobody failed to ‘carry,’ these things sometimes just happen) is something that people rarely talk about, and often go through in secret,” he continued. “But there needs to be zero shame around it, or around giving yourself the time and space to grieve. We decided to put ourselves out there – not knowing what we’d find – in an effort to chip away at any senseless stigma around this experience and to encourage people who might be going through it to open themselves up to love & support from friends and family when they need it most. Happily, for us – this time- we walked out with tears of joy.”

But those happy tears changed to heartbreak just weeks later.

“You never know why these things happen, that’s what I’ve been telling my kids,” James said in his final episode of Dancing with the Stars back in November. “All you know is that it brings you closer together, it breaks you open, it opens up your heart, it deepens your appreciation,” he said. “It makes you more human.”

In a December update, James said the couple is “still in repair.”

“Discovering that healing happens at its own pace. Not the pace you’d like, and definitely not the pace at which the world keeps on moving… But it happens. And there’s beauty in allowing yourself to be exactly where you’re at,” James wrote with a photo of him and Kimberly sharing a sunset together. “Plus, it’s not like you really have a choice, anyway,” he added.
