WATCH: Brandi Carlile’s New Video ‘The Mother’ is Everything Your Mama Heart Needs Today

Singer/Songwriter Brandi Carlile has long graced us with her uniquely glorious voice and song lyrics that hit you straight in the feels.

Case and point: I walked down the aisle to her classic, “The Story.”

But the Americana-Rock artist has truly outdone herself this week, releasing what I can confidently call the Motherhood Anthem we never knew we needed.

Carlile’s song, “The Mother,” is literally every thought and feeling we’ve ever had about raising tiny humans, perfectly wrapped up with a melody and strung together with complete grace and affection.

“Welcome to the end of being alone inside your mind // You’re tethered to another and you’re worried all the time // You always knew the melody but you never heard it rhyme.”

To describe it doesn’t do it justice. You have to listen for yourself.

And as if the incredibly powerful song lyrics weren’t enough to totally wreck your mothering heart, the stunning new music video she released to accompany them will surely do the trick.

Directed by Jess Lowe, and executed by an all-female crew, “The Mother” is a short film of YOUR life.

Changing diapers, brushing hair, breastfeeding, comforting crying kids, putting babes to bed, and wiping tears from little eyes are only just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the deep emotion played out in the nearly four-minute video.

Carlile wrote the song as a tribute to her 4-year-old daughter, Evangeline, who the singer proudly claims as her own throughout the melody.

“She’s fair and she is quiet, Lord, she doesn’t look like me // She made me love the morning, she’s a holiday at sea // The New York streets are busy as they always used to be // But I am the mother of Evangeline.”

Every oh-so-relatable word is perfectly paired with a day-in-the-life scene that we as mothers know all-too-well.

“The first things that she took from me were selfishness and sleep // She broke a thousand heirlooms I was never meant to keep // She filled my life with color, canceled plans, and trashed my car // But none of that was ever who we are.”

But ask any one of us and we’ll tell you, we wouldn’t trade this calling of motherhood for the world.

“The Mother” is part of Carlile’s latest album, “By the Way, I Forgive You,” which won the Grammy for best-Americana album earlier this year.
