Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood took to Instagram this week with a candid honesty about her struggles with “bouncing back” post-baby, and loving her body through it all. It’s the body-positive message that every woman needs to hear today.

The 35-year-old posted a mirror selfie on Tuesday while working out at the gym — something she says has been a struggle since giving birth to son, Jacob in January.

“I’m going to be honest, ‘bouncing back’ after having Jacob has been much more difficult than after I had Isaiah and I’ve been pretty hard on myself lately,” she wrote. “I go into the gym and I can’t run as fast or as far. I can’t lift as much weight or do as many reps as I could a year ago. I just want to feel like myself again… for my body to feel the way that I know it can.”

Her honest post is the glimpse into a struggle that all mothers face. We know what our body used to be like. We know how certain muscles used to work, and different curves used to feel, but after having a baby, we can feel like a shell of the woman who once was.

The singer goes on to say that pregnancy changed more than just her body, it changed her life.

“As I was working out today, I realized that for the past 11(ish) months, my body has not belonged to me. It was a perfect home for Jacob. And even now it belongs to him every time he drinks his milk.

Her realization led to this empowering message of self-love, and appreciation for the body she has in this season.

“As I prepare for red carpets and for life on tour, right now I make a promise to myself to start appreciating what my body CAN do and stop focusing on what it can’t. I promise to stop analyzing every angle and every curve and every pound and every meal. I’m going to keep staying the path because it is a journey and as long as I’m always working towards my goals, one day I’ll reach them. I’m going to take it day by day, smile at the girl in the mirror, and work out because I love this body and all it has done and will continue to do!”

Rather than focusing on what her body can’t do right now, Carrie is changing her perspective and focusing on what it has done, and what it can do.

Her vulnerability and honesty about the insecurities facing had fans praising for all the right reasons.

And let’s be honest, if I could look an eighth as good as Carrie Underwood TWO MONTHS after giving birth in my thirties, I’d count that as a win.

Keep on rocking, Carrie. You’ve got this.
