When I heard funny man Seth Meyers baby boy was born Sunday afternoon, my first thought was, “Wait didn’t he and his wife JUST have a baby?” Turns out that was two years ago, but it seems like yesterday when it’s not your kid! HA! I remembered the story because I’d seen Seth hilariously relate the story of how his wife Alexi Ashe nearly gave birth to their first baby boy, Ashe, in an Uber — they barely made it to the hospital in time! As a matter of fact, in his re-telling of their new baby boy Axel’s birth, Meyers referenced the story of their first birth by saying, “MOVE OVER, THAT STORY!”
That’s when I knew I was in for a treat, so I kept watching.
Turns out, Seth Meyers baby boy Axel was born not at the hospital, and not in the Uber, but in the LOBBY of their apartment building!! WHAT!?!?!? Typically, Meyers told this story of his son’s dramatic birth in a hilarious and heartwarming way. I laughed AND cried (as did he), and you HAVE TO WATCH IT!
Meyers describes how his wife was definitely feeling contractions Sunday morning but nothing strong or close together, when all of a sudden while he was feeding his son Ashe lunch, his mother-in-law came in to the kitchen and said “WE HAVE TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL NOW!”
Though Meyers called yet another Uber, they never needed it…by the time they made it to the apartment building’s lobby, Alexi Ashe announced, “THE BABY IS OUT!” Meyers and their doula got her on the lobby floor, and sure enough, the baby’s head was already born. Meyers called 911, but, he says, it was already too late:
I called 911 and over the course of a minute conversation, I basically said, ‘We’re about to have a baby — we’re having a baby — we had a baby. I went from someone calling in about an emergency to sharing good news with a stranger.”
Soon the New York City fire department and police department, as well as some skilled EMTs were on the scene to help out. A firefighter cut the cord, “which is apparently also something they know how to do,” an awed Meyers recounted. Both mom and baby Axel Strahl are doing great. After sharing a hilarious photo of the dramatic aftermath, Meyers launched into a sentimental verbal tribute to his wife that totally made me CRY CRY CRY, it was so sweet.
After he started crying, he joked, “I’m just getting choked up about how brave I was.” HA! I love a man who can give credit to his powerful, amazing wife any time, but especially after she’s just brought his child into the world!
Meyers also revealed this Axel’s middle name “Strahl” is the last name of wife Alexi’s maternal grandparents, both Holocaust survivors who met in a hospital in Austria they day after they were liberated from a concentration camp. Also he never met them, he says, he is so thankful that they fought so hard to live so that his wife and children could be born. (Then I cried again.)
I want to wish the MOST heartfelt congratulations to the Meyers family on the addition of their second baby boy, and also my thanks for keeping your births VERY entertaining!
Did YOU have a whirlwind fast birth? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
