An 18-year-old has been arrested in Chicago after sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl during her remote learning class on Thursday.
Police were made aware of the attack when the girl’s teacher saw it on a computer screen during a Google classroom e-learning session.
Catrell A. Walls began molesting the 7-year-old victim during a break in the online learning schedule. During which time, the teacher had asked all students to mute their microphones and turn off their cameras. While the student’s microphone was muted, her camera was still on when Walls made her perform sexual acts.
According to Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Andreana Turano, the victim initially said Walls “just hit her” and said it was a “secret.” She later revealed that this was not the first incident of its kind.
“The victim disclosed ‘he made me put my lips on (him) and this has happened before, and I don’t want my daddy to know, it’s a secret,”‘ Turano said, quoting the victim.
Several students witnessed the incident as the girl’s mic was muted, but her camera was on. When the teacher saw her student being molested, she repeatedly ordered all the students to “log off!” and then called out the victim’s name and told her to turn off the camera.
“She saw the defendant close the computer,” Turano said.
The teacher immediately called the police, the school principal and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. Officers went to the victim’s location where the teacher identified Walls as the perpetrator.
Walls was arrested without bail and charged with predatory criminal sexual assault of a victim under 13 years old.
