Unless you live under a rock, you know that 2015 was NOT a good year for the Duggar family of TLC fame. After oldest son Josh’s past sexual abuse of his sisters was made public, TLC cancelled the family’s show 19 Kids and Counting. Then, when the Ashley Madison cheating website was hacked, it was revealed that Josh Duggar had an account on the website, and he confessed to cheating on his wife, Anna, who was pregnant with their 4th child at the time.
TLC hasn’t completely eschewed the family, however. Last Sunday night, the first installment of Jill & Jessa: Counting On, which follows Duggar sisters Jill Dillard and Jessa Seewald aired on the network. In it, Jill and Jessa spoke about the way their brother’s scandals and his sexual abuse had affected them. But the episode Duggar fans are really waiting for airs this coming Sunday, December 20th. In it, Josh’s wife Anna will speak for the first time about his marital infidelity and how she is handling it.
In a clip available on TLC’s website, Anna talks emotionally about her husband’s actions, saying they were “such a betrayal for a spouse”. I personally was extremely impressed with her ability to keep her composure while talking about such a painful topic. She was visibly upset yet she held it together well; this is clearly a woman with a backbone of steel. Some of her comments that impressed me the most were, talking about her reaction to Josh’s confession:
“But I knew that my only hope was to cling to my faith, because I know that if I went off of what I was feeling, I would turn a mess into a disaster.”
Her ability to restrain what surely were very strong emotions and seek God’s guidance through this shows a great deal of wisdom and self-control. She also commented on the public way her tragedy played out: “It is such a betrayal for a spouse to go through what we’re walking through, and it was hard,” she says. “It was hard to realize that it was such a public thing, and so not only was it a betrayal against me, but it was also a betrayal for those that call themselves Christians, because here we were as a Christian couple, everyone was able to see us get married and to vow before God to be loyal to each other, and that loyalty was broken. ”
Anna didn’t say it in this clip, but it is implied that she and Josh are still together. What she does say several times is that she has prayed and prayed for God to help her through this—and whatever decision she comes to in the end, if she’s going through it with God’s guidance, and looking to Him first, I know she’ll be okay.
You can watch Anna talking about her husband’s betrayal and the aftermath below—like I said, I was super-impressed with her. I’d love to hear your thoughts, too.
