Dear Morgan, Levi and Taylor,
Today we had car trouble and couldn’t make it to church. Daddy went very early since he’s in charge of tech at our church, and I thought I’d do church with you at home. But as the morning went on I was so troubled inside and praying for you and for our world.
You know, because you first saw it with me, that bad men killed innocent people in Paris on Friday, November 13th. We were just settling in for a fun Friday night show, but when I turned the TV on, that’s what we saw. I tried to tell you as much as I thought prudent without scaring you. You know I love Paris since I grew up in France and Daddy asked me to marry him at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.
There are so many thoughts swirling in my head it’s hard for me to do much but function and pray.
6 different attack sites in Paris.
129 killed and 352 injured and martial law for the first time in Paris since World War II.
Arrests in Belgium close to friends of friends… How many are in the U.S.?
Closing borders… People calling for our borders to close… Obviously I don’t want terrorists here, but what happens to legitimate refugees?
What happens next?
I started to worry so much this morning I just gave up the idea of church with you guys.
But as I was peeling potatoes for lunch I heard you in the front living room.
Morgan, you had Levi’s toy guitar, Levi, you were singing into the handle of the toy vacuum and Taylor, you were banging on an oatmeal canister drum. I heard you praying, Morgan. You were thanking the Lord for being good and strong and always protecting us. For being a great God who made everything. You started playing a song with your own words, and Levi, you interjected, “Sing it now!”
I asked you what you guys were doing, and you said you were having church because we couldn’t go to church.
Taylor, you stood up and I swear you preached in your strong voice about how God made the sky and the earth and us and the whole world. You said
“We should sing for Him. We should make way for Him. He is brave and strong.”
Then you guys fought about who should pray next.
It was the best church ever.
You told me to read my blue Bible.
I don’t know how long any of us will be on the earth. Will Jesus come back in my lifetime? Will he come back in your lifetime? If I’m not here and times get really bad, there are things I want you to know.
So, this morning, I read from my blue Bible about the One whose name is Faithful and True. I just can’t wait until He comes.
Here’s what I read to you, and what I want you to remember about him:
11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war.12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself.13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God.14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean.15 Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty.16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
I gathered you around me and looked you straight in the eye and told you because I want you to know now:
There may be people who say they are him. There may be someone who sets himself up as God and does amazing signs, even coming back to life after dying (Revelation 13:3.) But if you do not see the rider on a white horse come from heaven, it is not Jesus. Do not be fooled.
There may be very bad things that happen in our world. Morgan, you asked – Things like the bad men killing people in Paris? Yes. Like that. I want you to know that you do not have to be afraid. Satan’s time is running out, and he knows it.
I asked you what was going to happen to Satan, and Levi, you knew – He’s going to jail forever. Revelation 20:10 says “And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”
I want you to know these things because I want you to know in your very bones that there is an end to evil and death. This does not last forever – God said so.
So. People can hurt us and put us in prison and do awful things I can’t bear speaking of, yet I pray against, but they cannot take Jesus away from us and they cannot take us away from Jesus.
If you have confessed with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe it in your heart, you are saved (Romans 10:9) and anything that happens on this earth is very short indeed compared to eternity with God.
Do not be afraid.
Do not lose heart.
Be strong and very courageous.
And, like you did for me this morning, continue to:
Strengthen the feeble hands,
steady the knees that give way;
4 say to those with fearful hearts,
“Be strong, do not fear;
your God will come,
he will come with vengeance;
with divine retribution
he will come to save you.” (Isaiah 35:3-4)
Love you forever,
