Every time Rory Feek shares a new update on Facebook or on his blog, This Life I Live detailing the latest in his wide joey’s battle with cervical cancer, I feel like I get just a little bit wiser. In many ways, this family’s story has broken my heart over the past few months. But in many other ways, it has strengthened my own faith as I stand in awe of theirs. This video of Joey getting out of bed after days of not being able to, visiting with friends and family and, as Rory says, “being a mama again” is truly just so, so beautiful. Joey Feek has taught me through her openness in this fight that every day with my children is a gift.
The country duo, known simply as Joey and Rory, also shared a version of this heartwarming moment in Joey’s cancer battle this weekend on their Facebook page. Friday, he posted this darling photo of Joey on the floor teaching some sign language to their 21-month-old daughter Indiana. Joey, who as I mentioned had been unable to get out of bed for several days, is glowing and looking so very happy to be sharing this moment with her precious girl.
Rory followed up this Facebook post with a wonderful blog post on Sunday night, in which he says, “Before Joey went to sleep this evening, I sat beside her and she told me that for her it’s all come into perspective recently. She said that when you’re lying in a bed day after day and you can do nothing and you don’t know if you’re gonna be here next Christmas, or next month or even next week… you suddenly become hyper-aware that today… that this moment – is all you have.
And that today is enough. It truly is a gift.”
Let’s all just hold tight to that today, mamas. TODAY is ENOUGH. Today is a GIFT. Let’s not long for tomorrow, for motherhood to be easier or less tiring or include more sleep at night. Let’s just let it be beautiful for what it is now…and let’s savor it, as a gift.
The Feeks have touched the world over with their bravery during Joey’s fight with terminal cervical cancer. She was first diagnosed in 2014, not long after Indiana’s birth.
Last week the family had more good news, when the duo learned their song “If I Needed You”, the soundtrack to a touching video of Indiana’s birth, has been nominated for a Grammy award. Rory has said in past blog posts on his blog that he and Joey are still praying for a miracle, and that they will have peace with whatever God decides will happen.
I’m so thankful that the Feeks are using this difficult time to praise the Lord and tell others about Him! Their faith is truly remarkable. Joey and Rory, we are all praying for you, and we’re so thankful that you shared this beautiful moment of hope with us!
