Despite the fact that breastfeeding is 100% natural and God CLEARLY designed our bodies to do it, for some reason there is still a stigma attached to breastfeeding in public. Now, I nursed all three of my babies and at first, I was nervous about getting it right in public, but after awhile I decided that my baby needed to eat when and where he was hungry! I’m sorry, I am not feeding my baby while precariously balancing on a public toilet seat.
Last week, mom of a newborn Jessie Maher had a particularly upsetting experience while sitting in a Target café feeding her baby. A male customer saw her nursing, said “You’re disgusting” and began hurling obscenities at her. Shaken, Jessie got her phone out and began recording the incident.
*Warning, the video contains some strong language, but watching what happens when store customers and employees realize Jessie is being harassed is amazingly uplifting!
The best part of the video is the 1:38 mark when Target employees form a barrier between Maher and her attacker until he finally leave. Go humankind! Way to support and protect a mom and baby!
Since Maher shared her video, it’s had over 5 MILLION views! Wow—that’s a lot of support for breastfeeding moms! I’m glad she had the nerve and thought to record the incident. It just goes to show the type of thing breastfeeding moms are up against, despite the fact that they’re simply trying to care for their kids!
Have you ever been shamed for breastfeeding in public?
