If you’re an “Olympaholic” like me, you probably remember gymnast Aly Raisman from the 2012 London games. She was part of the American “Fierce 5” that took home the team gold medal, and she also won a gold medal on floor exercise—and missed out on a bronze medal in the all-around because of a much-disputed tie breaker.
But what some remember MOST about Raisman’s 2012 performance? Her parents’ stressed-out squirms as she performed. Lynn and Rick Raisman’s nervous antics delighted viewers—including sympathetic parents like myself. I KNOW I would 100% be exactly like the Raismans if my child competed in such a high-stakes competition! The People of the Internet poked fun at the Raismans in good humor, turning their squirms and frightened facial expressions into memes.
But last night, as Aly Raisman took to the gym to move toward yet another team gold medal as well as all-around redemption in the qualifying competition, Lynn and Rick Raisman were TRUE to themselves—and their love for their daughter—once again. Mimicking every move of her uneven bars routine, they swayed back and forth and Aly swung from the bars, Lynn Raisman holding on to her husband for deal life. As commentator Tim Dagget said, they were in “agony.”
Until it was over, that is. And then? SWEET RELIEF!
Their daughter—and TEAM USA—knocked it out of the park! The US gymnsastics women are in first place after qualifying by nearly TEN POINTS—an unheard of margin. And Raisman won a hard-fought battle with reigning all-around gold medalist Gabby Douglas to qualify for the all-around competition.
Thanks to the Raismans for showing the world the passion and love for our kids that all parents have—especially competitive sports/events moms and dads!
I cannot wait to watch Raisman and Team USA take the floor on Tuesday night in the gymnastics team competition. Go USA!!
