Michael Phelps’ Adorable Headphone-Wearing Baby Steals the Show as His Dad Wins 19th Gold Medal

I don’t know about you, but last night my kids, husband and I cheered like a bunch of FANATICS as we watched Team USA edge out France in the mens’ 4×100 meter swimming relay to get the GOLD and bring this race “back to US soil” as team member Michael Phelps said after the race. This gold medal, shared with his teammates Caeleb Dressel, Ryan Held, and Nathan Adrian, was a whopping 19th gold for Phelps, undeniably the greatest Olympian EVER.

But the thing that made this medal EXTRA-special for Phelps? It was the first one his 3-month-old son,Boomer, ever witnessed. NOT that he’ll remember it! Olympic fans have long been treated to shots of Phelps’ mom, Debbie Phelps, watching him race and celebrating his victories, but this was the first time America got a peek at little Boomer Phelps and his mom, Michael’s fiancée Nicole Johnson. Boomer, who his mom was wearing in a red-white-and-blue carrier with dad’s initials on it, also had on adorable patriotic noise-canceling headphones.

Phelps had gone through some very troubled years despite his successes, and it’s great to see that he’s settled down, swimming great, and is happy with Johnson and baby Boomer. In the commentary earlier in the games, NBC analyst Rowdy Gaines said that he’s known Phelps since he was a young teen, and that he is now a “changed man.” The fact that Phelps grew up with an absentee father is well-documented, and it seems he is well on his way to stopping that cycle in his own family. He appears to be every inch the dedicated dad. And America is LOVING our glimpes of our favorite athlete’s little guy!

Congrats on the beautiful baby, Michael! Oh, and the 19th gold medal…looking forward to seeing you knock out a couple more medals this week!
