This past September, a photograph of Syrian refugee and single dad Abdul Halim Attar selling pens on the streets of Beirut, Lebanon while holding his sleeping daughter went mega-viral and brought much-needed attention to the plight of Syrian refugees fleeing the evil of ISIS.
Attar, whose wife left him when he fled Syria, has two kids ages 4 and 9, and has been in Lebanon for three years but has had much trouble as a refugee making ends meet. Out of desperation, he was selling pens to try and make money to feed his kids. When his photo went viral, people from all over the world stepped up to help in an amazing way! Total strangers who saw Attar’s commitment to his kids through this story on the internet stepped up and raised over $160,000 for him through a crowd-funding campaign.
That’s pretty amazing in and of itself, but what’s even MORE amazing is Attar’s reaction to the donations. Upon hearing about his newfound fortune, he said, “I want to help other Syrians.” And just a few months later…that’s EXACTLY what he has done! He took the funds and bought a bakery, a kebab shop, and restaurant and now employs SIXTEEN other Syrian refugees like himself. Check out the amazing story below and share it to spread this word of the amazing ripple effect of kindness, caring, and PAYING IT FORWARD!
