I don’t know about you, but it’s been a LONG WEEK for me as I awaited the new royal baby name, and I’m not even British! The child was born on Monday, and it’s FRIDAY, people! Sheesh. First of all, I am sort of obsessed with child-naming, and I have VERY STRONG OPINIONS, so I was enjoying the royal baby name guessing game (my bet was Albert Charles Michael or Albert Charles Philip). Secondly, I’ve been semi-obsessed with the royals since I was in junior high. Thirdly, I write for a PARENTING WEBSITE (that you now happen to be reading, so I really needed this news for a story (that you also now happen to be reading)!!
Because they took SO VERY LONG since the new baby prince’s birth on Monday to announce his name, all we could do was spend all week discussing how ridiculous it is that Her Royal Highness looked SO AMAZING seven hours after birth. Like, SERIOUSLY, do you gain magical powers when you marry a prince? I’ve been a little exasperated with William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. I mean COME ON, you had nine months to think about it! And I’m sure you already knew it was a boy. But then, look at them? How could I stay mad at those two?

But anyway!! This morning I awoke to the news that the new prince’s name is Louis Arthur Charles!! So, I wasn’t totally wrong, but I was mostly wrong. The choice of Louis surprised me because, although it is one of Prince William’s middle names, they already used it on their first child, Prince George Alexander Louis. So I don’t really know why the double-dipped on Louis. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with it, BUT there are plenty of names to go around! (It is also the name of Lord Louis Mountbatten, the Queen’s cousin, who was assassinated in 1979. He was a mentor to Prince Charles and uncle of the Queen’s husband Prince Philip.) Of course, I figured Charles was going to be one of the names — not only does it cover the name of the baby’s grandfather, the Prince of Wales, but it also is one of the middle names of the baby’s uncle, Prince Harry, and the first name of the baby’s great-uncle, Princess Diana’s brother, Charles, the Earl of Spencer.
So, now you know WAY MORE than you wanted to know about the royal baby name! What do you think? Do you like it? I definitely like it, but I am still a little confused about the double-dipping on Louis. Then again, like every single one of Queen Victoria’s granddaughters was named Victoria, so, I guess royals just DO that.
Congratulations to the royal family and all of Britain. Can’t wait for that royal wedding next month (to an American!! SCORE!)
