18 Years Later: Children of Firefighters Killed in 9/11 Attacks Follow in Fathers’ Footsteps

It’s a day our nation will never forget. Eighteen years ago today, terrorists struck the World Trade Center buildings in New York City, claiming the lives of more than 3,000 civilians and marking a tragic day that will not soon be forgotten.

This year, as people across the country reflect back on a day that shaped our nation’s history, children of the firefighters who heroically died that day are following in their fathers’ footsteps.

The current graduating class of the New York City Fire Department includes 16 men and one woman whose fathers died in the 9/11 attacks.

According to the New York Post, The Fire Academy’s class includes at least 13 graduates who lost a firefighter father on September 11, 2001, as well as the son of one police officer who died, and two others whose FDNY fathers succumbed to injuries later on.

They’re called “legacy” graduates, and it’s the most of any class in FDNY history.

343 New York Firefighters died heroically on this day eighteen years ago. They ran into fiery flames and falling buildings, sacrificing everything to save the lives of those around them.

In the years since 9/11, dozens of sons and one daughter of the heroes lost that day have joined the ranks of New York’s Bravest.

“Bravery runs in these extraordinary families who have sacrificed so much for our city,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro.

Among this year’s 16 “legacy” graduates are brother and sister Marc and Rebecca Asaro, whose father, Carl Asaro, died in the attacks on 9/11. The 39-year-old father of six was a 14-year veteran of the FDNY.

Marc and Rebecca are joining older brothers Matthew and Carl, who both currently serve in the FDNY.

The graduation is set for September 24th.
