Good morning and Happy New Year, Mamas! I took a break from the new round-up over the holidays because I took some time off work to be with my kids on their Christmas break. But now I’m back, and so are the news stories MOMS need to know. Here goes:
1. YouTuber Logan Paul is under fire for filming and broadcasting a dead body, mocking suicide
Logan Paul, a popular American YouTuber (as in 15 million subscribers popular), whose main audience is 10-15 year olds, came under INTENSE fire yesterday after he posted a video containing his discover of an apparent suicide victim in Japan. Paul and his friends were filming in Japan and visited the Aokigahara forest, a spot that is unfortunately famous in Japan for being a suicide spot. Sure enough, as Paul and his friends entered the forest, they spotted an apparent suicide victim hanging from a tree. According to the Guardian, their reactions were of disbelief and then JOKING, which is what really drew the criticism. After the backlash, Paul deleted the video and issued an apology, but of course you can still see the video online elsewhere (and it was viewed MILLIONS of times before it was deleted.) Knowing that his audience is impressionable teens, uploading such an upsetting video that not only SHOWS A DEAD BODY SWINGING FROM A TREE but also appears to mock suicide was a VERY poor choice on Paul’s part. If you have teens who struggle with mental illness or suicidal thoughts, PLEASE ask them if they’ve seen the video and talk to them about it, PRONTO.
2. Nicki Minaj is trying to break the internet by posing nearly nude
Rapper Nicki Minaj is taking female empowerment one giant step BACKWARDS by posing for the cover of Paper Magazine with nothing but pasties covering her nipples. She also posted the photo to her Instagram with the hashtag #breaktheinternet — echoing Kim Kardashian who famously broke the Internet with her nakedness in Paper Magazine a few years ago. Not a fan of Minaj’s lyrics over here, but as a successful woman in hip-hop, she IS popular among teen girls. So talk to your daughters about how in this age of sexual harassment, putting your boobs fully out on the cover of a magazine does NOT help. Even fellow rapper and “The Talk” host Eve said she did not agree with Minaj’s move, saying, “I worked with Nicki, I got to know her on ‘Barbershop’… she’s a nice person, she’s an amazing rapper, and as a lyricist I respect her… but as a woman, from my point of view, personally, I would not be able to do that. I think in this climate, it’s not good.” She went on to say that whether they like it or not, she and Minaj are role models for younger girls and that “For the Nicki fans, I love her, respect her. Go women in hip hop. It’s not my thing. I just don’t think it’s right. Personally. Period. That’s it.” See Eve’s full statement below, and do yourself a favor and DO NOT go look at Minaj’s or Paper Magazine’s Instagram, k?
3. Hoda Kotb is IN at TODAY
SPEAKING of sexual harassment, NBC announced in this morning that Hoda Kotb will be the permanent replacement for recently-fired Matt Lauer. Lauer was ousted in November over allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior.

Upon making the announcement this morning, TODAY host Savannah Guthrie said,
This has to be the most popular decision NBC News has ever made.”
“There’s no one I’d rather be sitting next to in 2018 than you,” Kotb said in return.
Kinda love seeing these two working moms co-hosting together! Best wishes to them both.
And THAT’S the mom news for today, my friends. Hope your New Year is starting off GREAT!
