Serena Williams’ Husband Writes Tear-Jerking Instagram Post After Her Wimbledon Loss

Serena Williams is undoubtedly one of the greatest tennis players, and I’d venture to say even one of the greatest athletes, of all time. In her sport, there’s pretty much nothing she hasn’t won. But, no one can win every single time, and Williams is no exception to that rule. This week, just ten months after giving birth to daughter Alexis Olympia and nearly dying from complications related to a blood clotting disorder, Williams returned to tennis’ biggest stage—Wimbledon. Serena Williams has won Wimbledon an astonishing seven times as a single player, and another six times as half of a doubles team with her sister Venus. But this week, she lost to Angie Kerber in the Wimbledon finals.

A Wimbledon loss, however, does not make Serena Williams a loser.

Far from it.

Serena Williams just had a BABY, y’all. And then a life-saving surgery.

Coming in runner-up for tennis’ biggest title just ten months later is INCREDIBLE. I’ll tell you what I was doing ten months after I had my first baby and c-section: I was just trying to adjust to being a wife AND a mother and working twenty hours in an office all week. I wasn’t trying to be #1 in the world at anything. I was simply trying to be good at a few things, and it was a challenge. Also, Serena Williams is 36 years old. When I had my first kiddo, I was 26. If I’d had my first one at 36 I might not have made it out to the grocery store after 10 months, much less onto the world’s biggest stage for people in my profession!

So, Serena Williams, I am in awe of you.

Of course, my fan-dom and admiration don’t mean much to Serena in her every day life. But whose does is her husband Alexis Ohanian’s. And after Serena’s Wimbledon loss two days ago, he took to Instagram and wrote the sweetest. post. EVER. I mean…with a support system like this, I believe Serena truly is unstoppable. Posting a photo of Serena looking fierce as she served the ball, Alexis says,

Days after our baby girl was born, I kissed my wife goodbye before surgery and neither of us knew if she would be coming back.

We just wanted her to survive—10 months later, she’s in the #Wimbledon final.

Congratulations, @angie.kerber.

@serenawilliams will be holding a trophy again soon—she’s got the greatest one waiting at home for her. Our family knows she’ll win many more trophies, too.

She’s just getting started. And I couldn’t be more proud.

Excuse me while I go get a box of tissues! Is that sweet, or what?? Perspective, man. It’s so important after a loss. And though I don’t know Serena Williams, I am betting she needed that dose of love and perspective from her husband.

I don’t know Serena Williams, but I do know what it’s like to be a working mom.

I know what it’s like to be a working mom and feel like your value or productivity is questioned after you have a baby. I’m sure that on her first time back on this big stage, Serena wanted to prove that she could do it all. It’s only natural. As women we live in a society where our worth is questioned always, and most especially in relation to our ability to contribute professionally after we have a child. Certainly there are those who say “I told you so,” about Serena’s Wimbledon loss. There are some for whom 2nd place will only ever be 1st loser.

But Serena married a man wise enough to know this: her first time back on the court is not the end-all be-all. It’s the beginning. It’s the re-birth of an amazing athlete who now has the chance to prove that she’s better than she ever was.

The old Serena Wlliams had a lot, but the new Serena has more reason to fight and succeed than she EVER did before.

Her husband Alexis Ohanian knows that. And very, very soon, her opponents will know that too.

Serena’s own Instagram post after the finals shows she knows it, too. She says,

These past 2 weeks was amazing. It also was a sound for all moms stay home and working you can do it you really can! I’m not any better or diff than any of you all. Your support has ment so much to me. Let’s keep making noise everyday in everything we do. I’ll be back (and soon too)
Road to the Us Open is next! Stay strong no matter what. Oh and this is just the beginning. Love you 💪🏿

Congratulations, Serena. You inspire me.
