The Joy of ‘Dadurday’: Why One Mom Swears by New Family Weekend Tradition

In the hustle and bustle of family life, finding a balance between quality time with the kids and much-needed personal space can be a challenge. For stay-at-home parents, the moment their partner walks through the door at the end of a long day often brings a sense of relief and joy. But those few evening hours might not always suffice in recharging one’s batteries or offering children the dedicated attention they crave. To bridge this gap, one family has embraced a wonderfully innovative tradition known as “Dadurday.” This weekly ritual not only provides mom with a well-deserved break but also fosters unique bonding experiences between dad and the kids, turning Saturdays into the most anticipated day of the week.

TikTok mom Kelly Irene introduced this concept in a viral video that has resonated with countless parents. “We had implemented this thing in our house called ‘Dadurday,'” Kelly explains. “And Dadurday is slowly becoming one of the most anticipated days of the week for us.”

Every Saturday, Kelly’s husband takes their toddler on an adventure, leaving Kelly with some much-needed alone time. “Basically every Saturday, my husband will take our toddler, and they will just go off on these little adventures together. I am not invited. This is just daddy and daughter’s special time, and they go and have the time of their lives,” Kelly shares. Their adventures vary from going to the beach or hiking to swimming in town. “They do whatever they want. I don’t even ask. None of my business,” she adds.

The joy and bonding time for both father and daughter is palpable. “She lives for it. He lives for it because it’s his special bonding time with her. He works like Monday through Friday. So he works from home. So he is still getting good time with her during the week, but he is not having Dadurday experiences on weekdays. So, when Saturday rolls around, it’s his time to shine. They love it.”

Kelly also notes the added benefit of Dadurday for herself: a break. “She always comes back pooped. Like absolutely wiped out because they had so much fun. She takes a long nap. It’s just a great experience for everyone. All around. Couldn’t recommend it enough. And I do recognize we only have one child. So I’m sure as our family expands, Dadurday is probably going to look a little different. It’s going to evolve!” she says.
