Our kids school pictures are always so important to us mamas. I mean…they are the literal snapshots of our babies from year to year that we love to show off today and know we will love to look back on some day. So, I always encourage my kids to give their hair a check in the mirror and smile extra nice for their school pictures! Gotta make those memories pretty, right?
One St. Louis mom, Laurel Boone Hutsell, went above and beyond the usual school pictures advice with her middle school son, Carter. For Carter, school picture day was also the FIRST DAY of seventh grade! No pressure! (Personally I think school pictures on the first day are a recipe for disaster!)
According to her essay on Love What Matters, Hutsell gave her son tips and tricks for the perfect school picture smile, and even advised Carter on his wardrobe, suggesting a neon green shirt that would really POP against the typical gray, blue, or taupe backgrounds used for school pictures. Hutsell says their wardrobe discussion went like this:
Me: ‘You have the dark gray, but that might blend in with the gray background they used in last year’s picture.’
Me: ‘You also have the navy, but you have already worn that one before. And last year you had this darker turquoise color on.’ We referred back to the 6th grade ‘head and shoulders only’ picture that is proudly hung in our foyer.
Carter: ‘Yeah, okay. So what do we have left?’
Me: ‘Well, this green one. That should look great against the gray or taupe background. Whatever they use.’
It was a GREAT plan—in theory. Her handsome middle schooler had his smile and hair ready to go, and that shirt was SURE to stand out, right? But then Carter came home from school saying, Mom, I shouldn’t have worn the green shirt for pictures. It will blend in with the green screen they used.”
At first, Hutsell tried to be positive. She wrote on Facebook that her response was “They used a green screen? What?! I probably should have read some fine print. Maybe they will be ok.”
You guys, they were NOT OKAY!! I am DYING laughing after seeing these! Happily, Hutsell is not having trouble seeing the humor in Carter’s school pictures! She posted them to her Facebook page where they quickly went viral….and it’s easy to see why! Check out the AMAZING photos below!
I mean…are those the BEST school pictures you have ever seen or WHAT? I can’t decide which I love the most, the American flag or the autumn leaves scene!!! I literally cried laughing as I clicked through all the glorious green-screen floating head school pictures!
In her Facebook post, Hutsell says,
“Seriously cracking up! At least his hair and smile were on point! 😊Which one should we choose? I’m kind of partial to the flags.
Update: I’ve asked around. There was no “fine-print-green screen” warning.
Hey at least she’s off the hook for not reading the fine print?
I don’t know about you, but this MADE MY DAY, and I am 100% certain that I will never, ever, ever send my kid to school picture day wearing a green shirt. Except that I’m pretty sure I already did! My 2nd grader totally wore a green shirt for picture day, and it never crossed my mind. They’ve ALWAYS used the traditional gray background so here’s hoping my luck holds out on that this year…or maybe not…if my 2nd grader ends up with a set of school pictures like Carter’s, I might actually buy the extras for once. EPIC!
Have you ever had a school picture snafu of this magnitude? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
