There’s Only One Thing to Say to the Parents of the Boy Killed Atop This Rotating Restaurant

Naturally, a lot of Monday Morning Quarterback parents have a LOT to say to this boy’s grieving mom and dad. Comments like:

“Restaurants aren’t playgrounds, they are places for dining. I’ve seen so many loose kids nearly trip the wait staff. If they can’t sit down and enjoy a meal at a restaurant, then they’re not ready to eat at a restaurant.”

and

“This is awful – and I don’t mean to blame the parents but they should always manage their kids.”

and

“So sorry for this little boy. I see it all the time, parents allowing little children to run free. Its not your home. Supervision of your children is expected. Tears for this little lost soul because of neglect.”

Are SUPER not helpful. These commenters should be ashamed of themselves. It was a FREAK accident, and all parents SHOULD be saying, “There but for the grace of God go I.” Accidents happen to the best of parents…whether they are 5 inches or 5 feet away from their beloved child. As the parent of a six-year-old boy who was five not long ago, I know little boys jump up, wiggle around, and yes, sometimes wander 5 feet away for a minute. It HAPPENS.

There is only ONE appropriate thing to say to these parents: “I am so, so sorry for your loss. Your son’s life was precious, and I am praying for you.”

That’s it, Internet. That’s all you need to say. Please join me as I pray for the hearts of this grieving family! And as I hug my own babies extra, extra tight today.
