Sony stirred the hearts of several generations last week with a first full-length look at A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood starring Tom Hanks as the beloved Mister Rogers.
The trailer begins with that all-too-familiar jingle leading up to Mister Rogers entering the doorway of his home singing, “It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor, would you be mine, could you be mine?” He walks over to the coat closet as we’ve seen the real Mister Rogers do hundreds of times, exchanging his suit coat for a cardigan. Then, as usual, he heads over to his bench to change his shoes.
The nostalgia of just the first 20 seconds is enough to make anyone’s heart burst. But this story of Fred Rogers’ life only appears to get better and better.
Hello Neighbor!
Matthew Rhys stars as Lloyd Vogel, a young reporter doing a profile piece on Mister Rogers.
“Lloyd, please don’t ruin my childhood,” says his wife Andrea, played by ‘This is Us’ fan favorite Susan Kelechi Watson.
It’s a thought we all have when we think about the not-so-known lives of our childhood heroes. But Mister Rogers was different. His heart and compassion for people shined through him like the sun. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood appears to capture the essence of that perfectly.
“This piece will be for an issue about heroes,” Lloyd informs Mister Rogers. “Do you consider yourself a hero?” he asks.
