MJ complained of a headache and his mom gave him over-the-counter medication, but the fast-moving infection soon caused him to go into septic shock, and he died from organ failure. Since then, Sharon has become an advocate for meningitis and sepsis awareness, and she wants all parents to know the signs and that early detection is VITAL to saving your child’s life.
Here are the common symptoms of meningitis in babies, toddlers, kids and young adults that all parents need to be aware of, according to Meningitis.org (please check this link for an even more specific breakdown by your child’s age!)
- A high fever (but can run normal to low in babies under 3 months)
- Vomiting or refusing to eat
- Severe headache
- A tense or bulging soft spot (babies)
- Cold hands and feet
- A dislike of being picked up (babies)
- A sleepy or vacant expression or too sleepy to wake up
- Rapid breathing or trouble breathing
- Shivering
- ‘Pink prick’ rash marks or purple bruises
- An unusual grunting noise
- Pale or blotchy skin
- A stiff or floppy body (babies)
- Limb or joint pain
The Carver/Poole family is in our prayers as they deal with life after MJ’s death, but I think this brave mom for coming forward and spreading awareness so that other lives can be saved.
