One Illinois kindergarten teacher is challenging the norm when it comes to birthday celebrations in the classroom. Ann Brackemyer, who has spent years in the classroom, recently shared an “unpopular opinion” on TikTok that has since gone viral: skip the birthday cupcakes.
“Please don’t bring cupcakes,” Brackemyer urged parents in her video. “They make a ginormous mess, and the kids honestly don’t eat them. The frosting gets all over, and… it’s just too much for them.”
@kbcrayons Lets talk birthdays in the classroom! 🎉. Instead of cupcakes, Brackemyer suggests that parents opt for simpler, less messy treats. Store-bought cookies, miniature doughnuts, or Little Debbie Cosmic Brownies are among her top recommendations. “The children love them, and the best part is that they can bring them in themselves—just stick the box in their backpack, and you’re good to go,” Brackemyer told TODAY.com.
While she acknowledges that cupcakes are visually appealing, Brackemyer noted that most kids tend to lick off the frosting and leave the rest behind, leading to waste and more mess. She also shared a memorable alternative from her classroom experience: “I had a student bring in individual ice cream cups and sprinkles, and I never had a class more excited. They finished every bite.”
