The Last Selfie She Ever Took

You see, Courtney didn’t pull over to take and post the photo, she did it while she was driving. As soon as the post went online, Courtney’s car crossed the center line of the road she was on and slammed into a recycling truck at 45 miles per hour. Her Toyota Corolla left the road, hurtling into the air and slamming into a tree. It erupted into flames. Courtney was killed instantly.

Her Facebook post went live at 8:33 a.m. Records show that police officers and firefighters were notified of the crash just one minute later, at 8:34.

Though Courtney’s wreck happened almost three years ago, her powerful story is still being shared online in the hopes that senseless deaths like hers can be prevented. As her life and death clearly prove, texting/posting and driving is NOT just a teen problem — if we are honest, I think we’d admit it’s a temptation we ALL face. I know I certainly do.

I am committed to putting the phone AWAY in my purse while driving unless I am using it for directions (in which case the audio comes over my stereo speakers anyway, so I guess maybe I can put it away ALL the time). Will you do the same, friends? We owe it to our loved ones to make SMART choices –there are so many variables we CAN’T control to keep ourselves safe while we are driving, but this is one we CAN. Let’s do the right thing and put the phone AWAY while we’re behind the wheel.
