Tips for supporting your wife or daughters during that time of the month

It can be difficult to navigate life with someone who’s experiencing her period. Raging hormones, changes to her body, pain, and exhaustion can affect every aspect of life.

Rather than avoiding her, consider these ideas to help support her.

  • Be understanding. In all honesty, she may not be aware of what she’s feeling and thinking. From her perspective, she could just feel “off.” Admit that you’re not sure what will help and offer a couple of ideas for her to choose. Consider giving her a snack, taking a walk, or resting.
  • Give her an afternoon off. Let her relax and sleep. This might mean you need to take on an extra chore or to in order to free her up to recuperate.
  • Consider medical attention. The effects of a period can range from little to severe. Some women don’t feel cramps or experience great shifts in their mood. Others, however, have debilitating symptoms. In fact, there is Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) that can be treated by a doctor.
  • And, yes, create a period board. Think of her favorite snacks and pastimes. Chocolate? Crackers? Books? Ice cream? This is an opportunity to put a smile on her face.
