To the Students Walking Out Today

Or at least, you should have to go through a course and training of several months before you can own one. I don’t think Adam Lanza or Nikolas Cruz would have done that either.

Why can’t we just make it REALLY HARD to get an assault rifle? More than a background check. Classes to take and steps to take that most of these young homicidal men just would not be willing to take the time to do.

There are lots of good reasons for owning a handgun. I support a private citizen’s right to have one. My parents live on a mountaintop full of  bears half the year and in the fairly dangerous inner city the other half. My dad needs a gun, FOR SURE. And he should have one.

Not an AR-15, though.

Students, I am with you. As the Bible says, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” (1 Timothy 4:12, NIV). But remember the LAST part of that verse as well as the first. As you walk out, as you work in your activism, don’t resort to threats or insults, even if they are being hurled your way. Stay strong, and stay GOOD.

There are some who want you to “walk up” not “walk out”. I don’t think one excludes the other. DO walk up to that person who is bullied, and be a friend. DO walk up to that student who sits alone, and end his solitude. DO walk up to your teachers and tell them how MUCH you appreciate them.

Keep fighting for your lives, using good common sense, my friends. But love those around you WHILE you do it. Do both, and you will change the world in so man untold ways.

And I’ll be with you.

Because your lives are more important to me than my right to own an assault rifle. And the lives of my children are as well.

I support the 2nd Amendment, but I support you too. I am pro-life, for those who are not yet born and for those who already walk this earth.

Stay safe today.

With love,

A Mom
