‘Zoinks!’ Scooby-Doo Character Portrayed as a Lesbian in New Animated Movie

In a later scene, Daphne nudges Velma and says, “Now’s your chance to talk to her,” while they are riding in a vehicle together with Diablo. Velma is visibly nervous when she engages in conversation with Diablo because of her feelings for her. She is then rescued by Daphne before she says something she regrets.

“Okay, you’re doing great,” Daphne encourages her friend. Velma responds with surprise, “I am?”

“No,” Daphne honestly tells her.

Google celebrated the news of the queer character by raining down Pride flags when a user searches “Velma.”

Velma’s character has previously been portrayed as heterosexual. In 2004’s “Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed,” she has a similar experience when she meets a museum curator played by Seth Green. She is tranced when she sees Green’s character from across the room. Music plays in the background while the curator walks in slow-motion.

Velma’s sexual orientation isn’t the only troubling news for the beloved Scooby-Doo franchise. It has been announced that Mindy Kaling (The Office) will executive produce and voice the title character in an upcoming adult-oriented animated Velma spin-off series coming to HBO Max.

An image posted by Kaling at a Warner Bros. Discovery event earlier this year shows an animated Velma staring at the body of a young girl with the top of her head cut off while naked female bystanders gawk in horror.
