Serena Williams’ Mom Problems and More: Top News For Moms – December 19, 2017

Morning, my dears. Once again I’ve picked through the national news to find you some stories moms actually care about. (Cue Moana soundtrack), “You’re welcome!” So enjoy this newsfeed synopsis with just a little bit of my editorial thrown in!

1. Amtrak train derails on its first day of new service in Washington State, killing three

If you’re like me, you sat and stared at footage of the Amtrak derailment ONTO AN INTERSTATE in Washington state yesterday. I could NOT believe what I was seeing. CNN reports that much like the Titanic, the train was on its very first trip of a new express service from Seattle to Portland when it jumped the track, sending cars to the busy highway below. It was reportedly going over 80 miles per hour on a 30 mile per hour curve at the time. All of the fatalities were on the train, and no one on the highway below was killed. Naturally, the NTSB is investigating.

2. Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler opens home for abused girls

This story made me do a double take! Steven Tyler isn’t the first name that comes to mind when I think of philanthropy, but I love what he’s done here and found it grossly under-reported, so here ya go. This Rock-n-Roll Hall of Famer says he knew 30 years ago when he co-wrote the hit song “Janie’s Got a Gun” about an abused girl who killed her abuser that he wanted to do something to actually help those who had gone through it, and now he finally has. (Better late than never, I say.) Three years ago, Tyler started  the non-profit “Janie’s Fund,” and last week he opened Janie’s House, a home for abused and neglected girls just outside Atlanta. Tyler said he was also inspired by women he met in rehab for his substance abuse years ago.

“While I was in (rehab), I found out most of women in there were battered and beaten and abused verbally and sexually in huge numbers,” he said. “It was like seven out of 10, eight out of 10,” he told CNN.
He wants to help the girls who come through Janie’s House to find a path to success and not turn to drugs and alcohol to deal with the abuse in their pasts.  He wrote on Instagram after spending the day with the Janie’s House residents, “IM JUST SO PROUD OF THEM! I’M JUST RELIEVED THEY HAVE A SAFE SPACE TO BE WHO THEY ARE…TO GROW INTO AMAZING YOUNG WOMEN WHO WILL DO GREAT THINGS IN THE WORLD… #JANIESGOTAFUND
Nice work, Mr. Tyler.
