A Celebration Gone Wrong: Dad Pours Champagne Over 3-Year-Old’s Head at Her Birthday Party

A child’s birthday party celebration can range from a simple event to an elaborate party including family, friends, and all the child’s favorites. For one three-year-old daughter, her celebration included onlookers watching as her dad pours champagne all over her head.

“This is just sad,” said Aunt Karen, a TikTok commenter.

You’ve been there attending plenty of birthday parties, and maybe you’ve even planned a party or two for a three-year-old. But, you may have never been to a celebration quite like this.

A TikTok video shows a three-year-old girl enjoying her own Minnie Mouse-themed birthday party—complete with balloons and a big, frilly dress. Then, her dad pours champagne on top of her head as she squirms in her seat.

Aunt Karen posted the brief and added plenty of her own questions and comments. She began, “What were you thinking? We’re pouring champagne at a three-year-old birthday party… on a three-year-old. I need you to walk me through this process.”

“I love us, but we… this is too much. I’d like to think that a lot of people would agree.”

Many viewers were wondering about the “we” Aunt Karen referenced in the video. One asked, “Who’s we?!?!”

Others chimed in assuming Aunt Karen, a woman of color, was referencing the Black community and that this practice was potentially a cultural expression. But, many weren’t convinced.

JoJo offered, “Legit never seen or heard of this lmao but maybe that’s some other side I’ve never seen.”

“Rightt I hate that one thing one person do reflects all of us 😭” said Lannie. “I never seen nun like this in my lifeee! This is just horrible.”

And, another person of color added, “Right! This has nothing to with being black.”

Other viewers offered instances in other cultures, such as the Caribbean, where pouring alcohol on a daughter or son is a common demonstration of celebration or wishing one good luck.

But Angel Ray offered more from her own Haitian culture. “So am I the only Haitian whose mother opened a bottle of champagne over her head every birthday? She did it for 18 years.”

Aunt Karen went on to share her opinion of the incident. She wondered about the adults in the room as the dad pours champagne on his daughter’s head. “This feels like too much to me. And, all these adults, just standing around. Like, what are y’all doing?”

She doesn’t offer specifics of what she would have done in the same situation but asks for others’ opinions in the comments.

“A lot of people are like, ‘Well, it’s not my kid. If I was at the party, I’d just stand there, watch and talk about it later.'” Aunt Karen said.
