Yesterday while on Facebook, I saw an article warning parents that Minecraft had a “sex mod” and I’ll be honest, I may have muttered a few choice words under my breath. SERIOUSLY, why can’t perverts just leave Minecraft alone? Oh, I know why! It’s because perverts are relentless and will do anything to lure child victims into their schemes for the fulfillment of their sick desires. (The author of the original article I read found out about the sex mod because her child was playing Minecraft on her phone and was propositioned by another player via Minecraft chat who wanted her to install it. KUDOS to this mom for having a comfortable communication relationship with her child and laying the groundwork for this possibility so that her child came to her RIGHT AWAY when it happened.) UGH. So, after reading around a bit, I knew I had to do a bit of research and write this article to help other parents protect their kids from finding the sex mods and/or being contacted via Minecraft by a potential predator who wanted them to play Minecraft with the sex mod. Because I care about you SO MUCH, I took a deep breath and did the googling on the Minecraft sex mod. And I didn’t have to look far. Check out my YouTube search. Look at the search results I got — ALL I did was put in the word “minecraft” and before I was done typing, “minecraft sex mod” popped up. I didn’t even have to finish typing it.
Before I go further, let me point out that if you let your kid search YouTube for Minecraft videos, YOUR KID WILL ALSO GET THIS RESULT WITHOUT EVEN TRYING.
Therefore, the first way to protect your child from the Minecraft sex mod is…
DON’T LET THEM SEARCH YOUTUBE FOR MINECRAFT VIDEOS. If your kids like to watch Minecraft videos on YouTube, do your research and let them watch on only a couple of approved channels, like Stampy Cat or anyone else from this list on Common Sense Media. Do not let them just willy-nilly search YouTube OR ANYTHING ELSE for Minecraft videos. Or they might get results like this:
The above screenshot shows the top 3 results I got when I clicked “Minecraft sex mod” in my YouTube search bar. If you have a puberty-age kid who’s naturally curious about sex, I can imagine that these videos would be very difficult to resist clicking on. And if you have a younger child who plays Minecraft and isn’t even ready for the sex talk yet, then YIKES – is this how you want to introduce them to sex? UMM, NO.
