We’re Killing Our Babies and Calling it Public Health — What You Need to Know About NY’s Late-Term Abortion Law

Under the RHA, Mothers have the opportunity to rob the Lord of working those miracles. They have the earth-given authority to reject the One who created them and breathed LIFE into their womb.

We see this in Genesis, when Satan appears to Adam and Eve. He doesn’t force them to reject God’s gifts of the garden. In fact, he does just the opposite, convincing them that what they really want is to be more like God—a “gift” that can only come from eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

I don’t know if mothers in New York want to be more like God, but I do know that they want freedom. And like Adam and Eve, our people have been led to believe that freedom comes in the form of more choices.

Unnecessary Abortion

The new law also allows for abortion through all nine months of pregnancy when the mother’s life or health is at risk, something Live Action says is “completely unnecessary, as delivering a live baby via C-section is faster and safer than killing the baby in a two-day late-term abortion.”

Under New York’s previous 49-year-old law, abortions that took place within the third trimester of pregnancy were illegal and categorized as felonies. Those who committed one could receive up to seven years in prison.

The RHA eliminates any definition of abortion as a criminal act, and also now removes limits on who can perform an abortion. In addition to licensed physicians, now other medical professionals, such as nurse practitioners, physician assistants and certified nurse midwives, can perform non-surgical abortions, which is now categorized under public health.

New York’s abortion rate is twice the nation average with 25 to 27 percent of pregnancies in the state being terminated by abortion. According to Live Action, 78 percent of abortions in New York City alone are those of African American babies, meaning more black babies are being killed through abortion than being born in the city. Under the RHA, those numbers are likely to increase.

This is my daughter born at exactly 39 weeks in New York. Today the Reproductive Health Act was passed in my State. Under this act, had it been legal when she was born, I could have aborted my baby up to full term for “age, economic, social and emotional factors.” Basically, if I felt like it or if I felt unable to support a child the law would affirm that it was my right to choose whether she lived or died. If I tried to abort her and it failed, the law would provide no protection for her if she survived. If someone punched me in the stomach at 39 weeks and she died, the law would not consider her a person worthy of protection. Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said, “we’re saying that here in New York, women’s decisions matter.” What about this tiny woman- what voice would she have to make a decision? And what about me- that the law would affirm that I the mother am allowed to kill my innocent child before I met her? Yes, women’s decisions matter, and we have a shattering amount of responsibility to choose rightly. As I imagine the scenario where, instead of delivering this live baby, I legally allow someone to tear her limb from limb (a fate that even the most cruel-hearted person would not assign to an animal,) I know that that would be a decision that I would regret forever. I would never have felt Zelie’s sweet little morning kisses, heard her say “mama” like she did for the first time today, or felt her beautiful soft skin as she nuzzles up to nurse. Please don’t abort your baby, women of New York. Give him or her to me. In the 46 years since Roe v. Wade, abortions have claimed more than 60 million lives. That’s more than three times as many as the Holocaust. You guys, we proudly condemn the heinous acts of Hitler and his army. But through abortion alone, U.S. citizens have killed three times as many people as he ever did.

Earlier this month, new reports found that in 2018, abortion was named the leading cause of death worldwide with more than 42 million babies aborted JUST LAST YEAR.  With deaths from abortion exceeding those from cancer, HIV/Aids, suicide, malaria, and car accidents combined, several pro-life activist groups are calling abortion “the social justice cause of our time.”

In the days since Cuomo signed the RHA into effect, several women and mothers have taken to social media with a powerful message of pain and prayer.

She knew my voice, my heartbeat. She could dream, yawn and cry. She could feel pain. She was a person. If I had been murdered at this point of my pregnancy, the person who killed me would be charged with her death also, because there are two people in this photo. Yet – if this was me in 2019 in New York from this week on, I would be within my rights (if it were deemed “necessary to protect the patient’s life or health” – though these parameters remain literally that obtuse and unspecified) to go into a clinic and have a toxic substance injected into her skull, where she would then writhe in agony as she died a horrific and possibly prolonged death. I would then deliver her corpse. Not a cluster of cells – a fully formed child. If you’ve been following me for longer than 5 seconds you know I’m heavily pro-women and pro-women’s rights. I always have been and always will be. I have deep empathy for every woman who finds herself in an impossible situation and feels her options are limited, and I pray that the Church would become known as an empathetic and embracing community where people could turn knowing they will be loved and supported without judgment. I hope that we can expand the options and support networks that women have (i.e. maternity leave, subsidised childcare, subsidised adoption, fully subsidised contraception, community-based parenting support etc.) But what happened in New York this week is something different. You can call what Cuomo passed in New York this week what you want – but don’t call it an expansion of rights and freedoms. It is a horror.
