Wives, You Can’t Save Your Marriage by Trying to Change Him

2. Believe That God Can Change Him

The Bible tells us Sarah submitted to Abraham even when she may not have agreed with his decisions. She trusted God to lead her husband.

At one point in our marriage, I was sure that God had called us in a certain direction, but my husband disagreed. I was convinced that I had the “direct line” to God, while my husband didn’t. I trusted that God could use Peter, Paul, and even Abraham—but somehow, not my own husband.

The truth is, God has the power to speak to and change our husbands. If our position is truly aligned with God’s will, He will change our husbands’ hearts—without our interference. Sometimes, He wants us to step aside so He can work.

After our fourth child, I desperately wanted another baby. My husband did not. I finally told him I would stop bringing it up and instead, pray. Some months later, he gave me a Valentine’s card saying my gift was another baby. Had I continued pushing, I would have only caused conflict and stress, rather than witnessing his genuine change of heart.

3. Trust God to Change You

Praying for your husband’s change of heart is good—but sometimes, God wants to change us instead.

Years later, my husband made a decision that I deeply disagreed with. I prayed relentlessly for God to change his mind, but the decision stood. I felt betrayed by both God and my husband. I told God that while I wouldn’t leave my marriage, I would never be happy in it again.

Then I prayed for something different: peace. I asked God to take away the pain in my heart.

The very next day, my prayer was answered. Nothing about the situation changed—but I did. I still believed I was right, but my heart was at peace. I felt love and compassion for my husband again.

Looking back, I see that God used my husband’s decision to grow my faith. Sometimes, God’s answer isn’t changing our husbands—it’s changing us.
